One year since graduating PT school

A little over a year out of graduating PT school, these are the things I continue to go back to when working with clients.

  1. Loading is information. When we challenge somebody’s system with external load or complexity of movement it gives us information on tolerance to specific activities. A tissue that is challenge is a tissue that will adapt.

  2. Basic load and stress management, good training principles, adequate sleep and nutrition are a good talking point in session. Focusing on lifestyle management will often move the needle more than the correct exercises or the next best modality.

  3. Rehab is training in the presence of an injury. I heard this from someone before. I was also asked this in my first year of PT school at the job fair. The gentlemen asked the biggest difference between personal training/coaching and physical therapy. I answered in saying that I think it is similar, the progressions and exercise selection just happen on a spectrum. That answer might not cover every person's specific conditions but applying solid regression and progression training principles will take people a long way.

  4. Making people more resilient and durable should be a top priority. It is my job to meet them where they are at to make them as durable and prepared as possible to meet the demands of their tasks.
